Haven't been fishing yet, waiting for a weather break. I know I'm just a wimp! I have made a couple of clamming trips to Netarts and got my limit of bay clams, YUM. Been getting ready for some Kokanee trips. Made some pancake down rigger weights. It's almost 5#. Need to try it. It's almost been a year! Well, I got a steelhead this year on the Alsea, first one in a long time! Made two bay clamming trips to Netarts. I got my limit each time. 12 Gapers and 8 Butter Clams. I like to grind them up and make clam patties. Oh, so good! Made two Kokanee trips to Wickiup. On the first one, I brought home 50 Kokanee. Size wise they were 11" to 16 1/2". I didn't fair so well on the last trip there, brought home 22, again the size was 11" to 14". I didn't get any of the bigger one's on that trip. A work thing has taken over. I did decide to only work 6 day's a week instead of 7 days a week!

Here is a brief summery of the last trip,

On this trip, I stayed at Princess Creek CG. for two nights, and then moved to Crescent for the last night.
Got there(Odell) on Thursday evening and was greeted with a white capped lake. I didn't launch because I was going to try Wickiup Friday morning. I fished it(Wickiup) for about three hours, zip! Not even one hit. Headed back to Odell, it was white capped again, I did launch this time and tried to fish, just too windy. Went back out in the evening, go 4, released two and put two in the old bread basket! Got up Saturday morning, it was still blowing. Decided to head to Crescent. Launched at Tranquility Bay(sand ramp) and got my five fish, came in and eat two, headed back out and replace those fish. Stayed the night and got another limit of five and then headed home. Fish were 12" or so, but fat. Got them all jigging with the Red Prism tape/White jig.
Well, that's it in a nut shell!

Not a bad trip, covered a lot of ground, wind was a factor at Odell and Crescent.

Wickiup Report

I've made two trips to Wickiup sense the last up-date and here are some of the fish I caught.

That's a 48 quart cooler and the fish are 14" to 16 1/2".

Here is the full report on my second trip that I posted on Ifish.

Got to the campground at 5:00 pm on Thursday, set-up camp, oh, did I say the campground was almost filled! I was about a 1/4 mile from the launch and pulled my boat for lunch and the night as there was no way I was going to leave the boat with everything in it.

Went out Thursday afternoon, the wind was blowing and the lake was white caped. I wanted some dinner so I got my trusty fly rod and went to town. Only managed one fish, that was dinner so I gave up of battling the wind and went in.

Friday was looking good, then the fog rolled in for a spell. Wasn't having much luck with the set-up I used last weekend, so I ditched the down rigger and just flat line a dodger and hoochie set-up(pink hoochie) and finished the day with 17.

Saturday was great right out of the hole, no fog, no wind and sun was just peaking up form Wickiup Butte, but somebody forgot to tell the fish that they where suppose to be caught! That day I switched to the fly rod and got 10 for the day using a green hoochie.

Went out Sunday, great morning again, only a little west wind and I hit a spot where I could do no wrong, boated 5 nice one's and then it slow way down. By 8 it was almost dead again and from 8 to 9, I only got two hits. Ended the day with 7. Packed it up at 9, broke camp and headed home.

I stopped by Odell on the way back, talked to a boat that just came in, they had there limit of 50. They looked to be 9" to 11". They where in the Trapper Creek Area. Talked to another boat, and they only had 3.

Meet Code4 there and camped with Salmon Loser and family. Had a great time, good weather, good company and came home with some fish.

Up-Date

It's been a while sense I've done an up date, so here it goes.

The first weekend of April (3 ed - 5 th) there was a gathering of Ifisher's at Lake Billy Chinook at Perry South CG. I managed to make it over the pass and went through Culver. It was 40 plus miles longer that the Indian Ford cut-off and a half hour longer. The only advantage was there was less gravel road. Had a good time meeting other Ifisher's, it was good to put faces with names. The fishing wasn't bad either. I ended taking home my 10 Kokanee plus all I could eat there!

April 17

I attended the Kokanee class that was put on by moknots at Suttle Lake Lodge. It was a very good course and leaned some new stuff. There was also a lot of free tackle given away. On to the fishing part. I fished a little on Thursday, had one on for a bit and then it came un-buttoned. On Friday I managed one 17" brown Jigging and one hit. With the way fishing was, I jumped ship and headed to Lake Billy Chinook. Started fishing about 10 in the morning and quit at 4:00 in the afternoon. I only got three Kokanee. I had some bumps while jigging, but nothing stuck. I switch to trolling with the lead core line and fly rod. Put on a squid I got at the class and shortly got the three fish, then it went dead! Went back to camp and got the bar-by going to cook a rib eye steak. Went out Sunday morning, had some hits on a jig, but came up with nothing. Briefly tried trolling, again nothing. Decided to pack it up and head home. I guess it does good to be humbled once in a while!

April 26

Headed for the coast to do some clam digging. Went to Netarts to get some Grapers and Cohogs. Got my limit by 10:00, back in town around 1 and finished the hard job of getting them all cleaned by 4. Now Al's I have to look forward to is going back to work!

Well that's it for now.

Crab Report

Went back to Newport on 1/16/08. Started crabbing about 2:30 pm. Pulled my first pot at 3:30, got three keepers. It was kind of hit and miss. Some pots had them and some did not. I got a limit by 8:00 pm and headed for the van. Went back out at Midnight. The first pot pulled, zip! I'm thinking a very long night. The second pot, 3 keepers. The third pot, 6 keepers! this is more like it. Finished the limit by 1:30 am. Loaded up and washed the boat, headed back to town. Got back at 4:00 am. Got some shut-eye and got up and got the crab cooked. The crab were 5 3/4" (Barely legal) to 6". I think the commercial fishermen have got all the big one's! Most were full, but had a few that where about 80%. The weather was good, slight east wind 5 to 12 mph and overcast with no moon.

Newport Crab Report

Made another trip crabbing at Newport in December, the 6 th to be exact. Left at "O" dark thirty and got to the ramp about 5:30 am. Got launched and pots in the water at 6:00. About at 6:30 made my first pull. Nothing but little ones! Re-set the pots, next pull netted two keepers. It went on like that for the whole day. I would say it was slow. Not a lot of tide movement. I did get my limit, but it took eight hours to do it. The crab where from just legal (2) TO 6 1/2". Had two that where 88% full and the rest where 95% to 100% full. Nice crab. It was about the the same for the other boats, some would get them and others not. I tried all over the bay. No hot spots. No wind, fogging all day but not cold.

Time Off

10/10/2008

Well, it finally slowed a little at work. Only 100 day's this year with out a day off! Last year was 110! I headed for the coast for a little crabbing. Left Salem around 4 PM. Hit a bottle neck at the bridge to West Salem, then there was an accident on 22 by the last Dallas exit, another slow down by the construction on 22 just before the casino. Well, not quit done! Very slow through Lincoln City. It took just over three hours to get to the ramp at Newport. Launched the boat, deployed the pots and did some waiting. Pulled the first pot, one keeper and one other crab! Checked the other pots, just some small crabs. It looked like I would be in for a long night! Moved around, pick up some more crab, 8, headed back to the launch to put them in the van before midnight. Let the other ones soak. Checked the other ones about 12:30, one pass through, 10 crab! Wa HOOOOOOO! Finished my limit, headed to the ramp, cleaned every thing up and headed for home. Got back in Salem at 6:00 AM. Saturday morning. Got the crab all cooked, boat cleaned and then got a call from work! Back to work at 7:00 PM. till 11 PM. I did have Sunday off!!!!!

Very nice trip, little wind, 3/4 of a full moon and only one other boat crabbing.

Gary K.

Odell Lake 6/14/2008

Went to Odell Lake on 6/12. Didn't get to the lake until midnight, long story! Parked in the boat launch area till 4:30 am. Got up and proceeded to find a camp spot. Went through one snow bank and was stopped by another. Ended up backing through the first one, probably waking up the camp host! Drove in the wrong way and got a camping spot next to Dullhook. Set up camp and DH headed out to Trapper Creek. I said what the heck, cooked breakfast, loaded the boat up and then headed out in front of Princess Creek CG.

I didn't see many fish on the finder, but dropped my jig to the bottom, a couple of jigs, fish-on! Not much wind, in fact it was very calm. I just wind drifted around picking up a fish now and then. By 10:00, there was a slight riffle and shortly after that the wind started. Headed back to camp to clean the fish. After cleaning the fish, I got an accurate count, 23! After I had them all filet, I cooked some for lunch, nothing like fresh Kokanne for lunch. Went back out in the afternoon. By this time the wind is really blowing. Got my anchor to hold and finished out my limit for the day.

On Saturday, started out at Princess Creek and then migrated to Trapper Creek. Fishing was a little slower, but that was ok because I still had Sunday to fish. Ended up with 15 fish on Saturday.

On Sunday headed to Trapper Creek, saw the armada and stayed on the out side of them. I didn't see a lot of fish caught in the mass of boats. I was picking up a few here and there. By 8:00, had my other 10 fish. The fish size was on the small size, 9" to 11 1/2" with most around 10" to 10 1/2". I got most of my fish on the bottom with a few caught casting. All fish were caught on jigs. Here is a picture of the jigs that I caught most of the fish on.

I caught fish on other jigs as well, but seem to migrate back to these.

It was a good trip, ended up with 50 fish, good weather(a little windy in the afternoon) and good company with Dullhook.

Tags: Odell Lake, Kokanee

aoljpictureUpload, aoljpictureUpload_1

I made three trips this spring. One to Crescent Lake, two to Odell Lake.

The Crescent Lake trip started out to be a Wickiup trip. I met up with Dennis (aka Dullhook) at Wickiup on Thursday evening. When I arrived at the campground I saw Dennis's boat already on his truck and he said "don't even bother to launch your boat". He was out all day and no bits. He fished all over the lake and saw very few fish on the finder. We decided to stay the night and then head to Crescent Lake in the morning. Go to Crescent and talk to some people at the first boat launch. They said they where getting some fish around the Boy Scout Camp area. We then headed to Spring Campground and set-up camp. Got the boats in the water and headed out. Got to the Boy Scout area and started jigging. Fish-on! It didn't take long to get our limit so we headed back to camp for a fresh meal of Kokanee.

After downing some fish, went back out in the afternoon to finish the limit, it didn't take too long. The morning fish where 12 1/2" to 13 1/2". The afternoon fish where a bit bigger, 13 1/2" to 14 1/2".

Odell Lake trips were in June. I got reports that the fish where small, so I waited till after Memorial weekend thinking the fish would be bigger. Well not so. The fish where running 10" to 11". I did get the two day limit for the time I was there. All of them where jigging. Most where on the bottom from 80' to 120'. Area's were Princess Creek, Gull Point, and Trapper Creek. Hopefully the fish will be bigger next year.

Odell Lake

Tags: Crescent Lake, Odell Lake,
